Staff Backend Engineer, AI Applications, Berlin

About the role

As a Staff Engineer, you will operate at the intersection of advanced AI and Bolt's production engineering ecosystem, setting the technical direction for conversational experiences that are personalized, empathetic, and natural, while meeting strict business, compliance, and reliability requirements. This is a high-impact, high-scope role where you will guide platform evolution, amplify the effectiveness of multiple teams, and deliver resilient systems that enhance customer experience at a global scale.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Define and evolve the technical vision for next-generation conversational assistants, setting architecture and long-term direction across multiple teams and partner orgs.
  • Drive adoption of scalable patterns for agentic AI systems, including orchestration, memory, tool use, and multi-channel consistency.
  • Design and productionize GenAI-powered customer support systems, covering agent frameworks, tooling, guardrails, observability, and backend services.
  • Build reusable platform capabilities that enable teams to develop, deploy, and iterate on conversational experiences reliably
  • Cross-org technical leadership and alignment: Identify ecosystem gaps and define interfaces, standards, and integration patterns across teams. Lead cross-functional alignment and execution, influencing roadmaps and driving consensus on platform direction.

We are not really looking for Node.js experts, but for cross-language engineers for whom a specific stack is just a tool to solve a problem, not the solution itself.

About you:

  • You have experience of thriving in an environment that has a fast customer-feedback cycle and having empathy for the end-user
  • You have a data-driven mindset with comfort around ML evaluation methodology - you know how to measure whether an AI system is actually working
  • You have a drive for leading initiatives and features till the end, even if the last mile is the hardest.
  • You have strong system design skills, particularly in distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and high-throughput data pipelines.
  • You have hands-on experience with LLM-based pipelines or agentic AI patterns (tool use, routing, state machines, multi-agent coordination).
  • You possess solid understanding of algorithms and data structures.

Experience is great, but what we really look for is drive, intelligence, and integrity. So even if you don't tick every box, please consider applying if you feel you're the kind of person described above!
